Who can join?
SPARKS is open to 3rd–5th grade students in our Montgomery County, Maryland service area. All communications go through a parent or guardian email. If you're unsure whether your student qualifies, just reach out — we'll let you know.
Is there a cost?
No — participation is completely free for all members. Books, STEM supplies, craft materials, and postage are all covered by our donors. SPARKS is a community program.
When and where do you meet?
Sessions are held once a month virtually, September through June — nine sessions per school year. Each session is 45–60 minutes. Exact dates and the meeting link are shared after sign-up.
What is the time commitment?
One virtual session per month, 45–60 minutes each, for 9 months (September–June). Students will be assigned a grade- and age-appropriate book to read before each session — but no worries if they can't get through it all! Our discussions are designed so everyone can participate no matter where they are in the book.
Does my student need to have read the book beforehand?
Nope! Our discussions include questions that anyone can answer, whether they've finished the book or just opened it — or even if they haven't started yet. Everyone participates.
What does my student need?
A device with internet access for the virtual session, a mailing address for their package, and excitement to open the box! We handle everything else — books, supplies, and materials are all mailed ahead of each session.
How are books and topics chosen?
Books are selected to match topics and themes students are excited about. Student input shapes what the club explores — which is part of why they stay engaged.
Is there adult supervision?
Yes. SPARKS is a youth-led, adult-supervised program. Our student leader designs and facilitates each session, and experienced adult educators co-facilitate every meeting for safety, support, and compliance — a true intergenerational model.
