Our Story

About SPARKS Book Club

A youth-led program built on the belief that every student deserves a safe space to read, grow, and feel seen.

The Founders

Student-Led From Day One

In 2020, sisters Ariel Pollard and Becca Pollard watched kids in the Montgomery County school system lose their routines, their friendships, and the simple joy of learning together. Together with Barbara Friedlander, Naomi Pollard, and Megan Murphy, they built SPARKS from the ground up.

They launched it as a virtual safe haven, a place where kids could gather over books, laugh, ask questions, and feel like themselves again. No grades, no pressure. Just reading, STEM, and community.

Now in its sixth year, SPARKS has grown from a handful of students on a video call into a structured enrichment program that pairs reading with hands-on STEM. It's still student-directed, still virtual, and still there every month.

Youth-Led, Adult-Supervised

Ariel runs the book club. She builds the curriculum with heavy guidance from experienced educators Barbara Friedlander and Megan Murphy, chooses the books and activities, and facilitates every session, while adult educators co-facilitate for safety and compliance. It's a true intergenerational model.

What We Stand For

Our Values

🤝

Community

Books are a bridge. We use stories to spark conversations that build genuine connections, trust, and a sense of belonging that extends far beyond each monthly session.

💡

Empowerment

Every student who joins SPARKS is smart, capable, and worthy. We make space for their voices, ideas, and creativity, and we tell them so, every single session.

🔬

Curiosity

Strong literacy and early STEM engagement open every door. Our activities help students build confidence with both books and science, and love learning for life.

My daughter has grown with reading so much this year and is excited to take ownership of reading the books herself. She loves to show what she knows when she gets on book club!
